Floating Points to play Sun Down Circle #024

Neuroscientist-turned-DJ Sam Shepherd, known under his alias of Floating Points, lands in Bali on Thursday 15 March to play a special Sun Down Circle at the Beach Club.

He’s respected around the world for his experimental productions and marathon party sets, but what may not be obvious at first sight is that the Manchester-raised DJ and producer is a classically trained pianist and ex choir singer.

His symphonic roots can be traced in his debut 2015 album Elaenia, consisting of seven ‘suites,’ and showcasing his own handmade sleeve artwork. Resident Advisor named it ‘Best Album of 2015’ and Sam was nice enough to let us use track one, ‘Nespole,’ on Made by Artisans, a short film by Katamama, our sister hotel.

Last year, Sam released Reflections – Mojave Desert, an album and accompanying film that was recorded with a live band amidst the vast, rocky backdrop of California’s Mojave Desert. Recorded between American tour dates, the album reflects the surrounding environment and sounds – the wind between the rocks and roaming packs of coyotes in the distance  – and is the first in a series that Shepherd plans to record in remote or interesting locations.

As a DJ, he’s played sets at some of the globe’s most established festivals, including Glastonbury, Primavera and LA’s FYF festival. He’s toured with the xx, collaborated with the likes of Caribou and Four Tet, and hosts the internationally renowned ‘You’re A Melody’ DJ parties.
