SSU 2017 Highlights – Two Days of Music and Culture in Bali

Drawn in by big-name headliners like Phoenix and Big Sean, music lovers from Bali, Australia and beyond touched down at Potato Head Beach Club for Sunny Side Up Tropical Festival on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 August.

Partnering up with Ismaya Live, we flew over a dozen of the planet’s most sought after vocalists, DJs and bands to play beneath the tropical palms of our Bali Beach Club.

More than 6000 of you joined us for this year’s party, entering the venue beneath Eko Nugroho’s ten-metre tall installation, Bouquet of Love.

Art installations, official merchandise pop-ups and Studio Eksotika, a new audiophile bar and design space, backed up the main festival line-up, an eclectic mix bridging genres from hip hop to alternative rock, indietronica and disco.

Friday’s acts included Chicago-based house music trio Autograf; British electronic duo Snakehips; Troyboi, an East London native known for trap music; Versailles rockers Phoenix; and British electronic group Hot Chip, as well as the Beach Club’s resident DJ, Dea. Coming on stage for the first of two late-night performances, Phoenix laid down their chart-topping tracks Liztomania and 1901 among a lively hour-long set.

Highlights of day two included Charli XCX’s rendition of her feel-good summer anthem Boom Clap and Big Sean’s spirited performances of hit singles, I Don’t F With You and Blessings – both were received with zeal by the Beach Club’s revved up crowd. Also playing on Saturday were DJ and Producer TOKiMONSTA, Australian selector Wave Racer, and rising British star Jonas Blue. Rising local talent, DJ Dubwill closed off the night with an eclectic set spanning hip hop, disco and funk.

As well as promoting music, mixology, food and culture, this year’s festival had a special focus on showcasing sustainable design. We collaborated with Merah Putih Hijau and Gringgo to build our stage and in-house installation from local plastic waste, one of many eco-forward initiatives for SSU 2017.
